Why do the directions for a fireproof gun safe state that it is not a proper storage place for CDs?

Is it a humidity issue? Chemical issue?

Is there anything that can be done in order to protect CDs to allow them to be stored in a fireproof gun safe?

Because it will still get hot enough inside a safe that the CDs will warp in fire. Also, cleaning guns requires a lot of solvents that emit fumes that could eat at the plastic over the data disc (under the plastic part you can see).

Does anyone have a suggestion of what to put under a gun safe that will be in the basement? Do I need to put it on a raised concrete slate or railroad ties or anything at all....any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated..thanks

I'm assuming the safe is metal. and if you have a water problem in your basement - definitely raise your safe several inches with some concrete slabs. other than that, you should be fine. dont put anything underneath the safe that will hold water such as wood or fabrics.

My stepfather is wanting a gun safe for christmas but was told he needed to make sure he got one with a gasket. We are looking at some from walmart but no one there knows if they have a gasket....Any ideas on which brands are good and which models come with a gasket? The ones at walmart are from a brand Sentry I believe.

I personally just purchased my first gun safe this past summer, and in shopping around and researching, I've found that gasket equipped, air-tight safes are not the way to go. First off, with a safe that is air-tight, most times there will be no mounting holes drilled into them so you can anchor them to the wall/floor. This means the only garuntee you have that the entire safe won't be stolen is the weight of the safe alone.

Also, on several of the safes I looked at, the door, due to the fact it contains all the locking mechanisms, weighs in at about twice as much as the rest of the safe. The door on the one I purchased, in fact, is so heavy that without anchoring it to the floor, when the door swings open, it tilts the rest of the safe forward (my floor is a bit uneven).

When you have an airtight safe, unless you have some type of dehumidifier (chemical or electric), you're effectively locking moisture inside with the guns, which can ruin them much faster than by having a non-airtight safe, due to the moisture in the air settling and becoming stagnant.

I would recommend you purchase a Sentry Fire Safe. It's the most cost effective route I came across, and what I ended up purchasing. Make sure whatever safe you buy is:

- Fire-proof

- Is a gun SAFE, not a gun CABINET (cabinets could be broken into by a determined 6 year old)

- Has at least 4-locking points (one on each side of the door, however, two on each side is much, much better)

- Has a dial, combination lock. (the ones with electric keypads, while more convienient, aren't as good. batteries are internal and can die, meaning a back up key has to be kept outside of the safe where anyone can access it, also, in a fire, the keypad melts, requiring a locksmith to open it, at a SUBSTANTIAL fee)

- Even if only looking to secure at little as 4 guns, get a safe that can hold a number more. This leaves room for any other valuables you with to secure, future firearm purchases, and any ammunition/accessories that go with the gun.

- Whatever type of safe you buy, make sure you get a dehumidifier for it. If you keep the air inside the safe dry, the safe and everything in it should last for, oh, just about forever.

The only way I know of is by a freight carrier. Call up a safe company and ask them for some advice.

Can you hear the lock trying to open? If you can, it may be stuck against the internal latch. Make sure the opening handle is fully in the closed position. Smack it closed with your hand a few times to break things loose, hit the door a few times, too, then try again.

If it still doesn't open, or you can't hear it trying to open, you probably need a locksmith. The people who sold you the safe can recommend one in your area.

I am curious because I know someone who has a gun to protect thier family but they keep it in a safe.

In all fairness the gun is in the bedroom by her bed.

But if someone broke into the house wouldnt it be a better idea to keep it under the matress or something?

Also if someone were to keep it under the bed is there a chance it will go off, if not why not keep it there?

Also, under the mattress is a very BAD idea. If You're attacked in bed, both your weight AND your attacker's will be keeping you from getting the gun out.

There's a product out there that holds a holster beside the mattress, where it can be concealed by the blankets, and still easily grabable in an emergency.

Keeping a gun for self-defense is not a bad idea, but you must put some thought into it, especially if you have children, or sleepwalk, etc.

Keeping the gun in a readily available place, but unloaded, while you keep a speedloader/loaded magazine on your person will ensure someone doesn't pick up a loaded gun.

The "you're more likely to use a gun on someone you know" arguement , while based on statistics, is flawed. What the numbers show and how they are presented by the anti-gun crowd are quite different.

Yes, in a large number of shootings, the shooter and "victim" knew one another. The anti-gun crowd tends to that this fact and say: "See! Guns are dangerous! You're more likely to have it used against you than use it in self defense. That's what the FBI says."

What they aren't telling you is this:

"The shooter knew the person shot", includes all sorts of people and situations that ARE NOT family-related (although some, of course, are). When Blood Gang-member "A" shoots Crip Gang-member "B", it goes in the above category.

When the police try to arrest a guy for the third time, and one of them gets shot, it goes in that category.

When the creep that's been stalking you, and you've gotten a restraining order, but he chooses to attack you anyway, and he gets shot, it goes in that category.

You know if you're likely to be shot by someone you know (abusive spouse, family is involved in gags or drugs, etc.) If you're not involved in this type situation, then the "guns are more dangerous to someone you know" argument does NOT apply to you. My wife got me a Winchester 24 gun safe for Christmas. I set it up and opened it to put my guns and stuff in and now I cant get the thing to close. It has a battery powered keypad and I think that it is locked and I cant unlock it to close it. I have tried 3 new batteries and it wil not even beep when I put the code in Any ideas?

What you have done is to lock it while the door is open. All you need to do is to unlock it. The safe came with an owner's manual and it will tell you exactly how to unlock it. if you follow the directions and it still doesn't unlock, you will have to call the company and ask them how to get it to unlock. The technical service number is in your owner's manual.

I collect firearms and was wondering if there was a way to display them while making them as difficult to steal as if they were in a steel gun safe. I dont care much for the wooden safes with glass because they can be comprimised, so is there one made of perhaps a heavy plastic that would work?
