First we are going to talk about the types of locks and then we are going to talk about the different types of wall safes that are available on the market today. Wall safes come in two different types. Usually a burgar safe like this wall safe here which is steel only. Typically 316" metal in the door and fits in between 16" studs and will go about 6" or 7" deep on a 2 x 6 wall. Then there is a burglar fire wall safe that gives you an added one hour fire protection. The burglar fire wall safes require that you have at least 15" or 16" depth behind the wall. Otherwise they wont work. And you also have to support it from the back with 2 x 6s or 2 x 8s to make sure that the added weight thats sticking out behind the wall is supported. Most wall safes come with two types of locks. Either a dial combination lock that has a factory preset combination. Or, a digital lock as you see here that you can set your own combination on. 3. Easy to Install. Though it may seem a bit intimidating, and obviously is easier to install when a house is being built, installing wall safes into an existing home is simple. Most are designed to fit between two wall studs, and come with a template. Just mark the wall according to the template, cut and install.
